All Patreon supporters pledging $8/mo USD or higher are eligible to participate in nominating games for the Boot Leg Gaming side series! If you'd like to pledge support to the show and participate, head on over to Patreon and sign up as a paid supporter! https://www.patreon.com/kasick/membership

How to Participate by Nominating Games

  1. Sign up as a paid supporter on Patreon at the $8/mo Unique Nominator Tier or higher, or sign up with a custom pledge of at least $8/mo USD.

  2. Send a private message to Kris from your Patreon account with a list of one or more games you would like to nominate. You have two options for the kinds of games you can nominate:

    1. The easiest option is to head to the Directories page and make selections from those lists for the dedicated gaming devices Kris has on-hand. Any games which have not yet appeared on the show will be plain white, while any games which have appeared on the show will link to the video the game appeared in.

    2. Alternatively, you can nominate standalone bootleg titles which were sold for computers, consoles, or portables. Note that this show is about "homebrew" bootleg software, meaning to qualify for the show, such a game cannot simply be a romhack of a licensed game, must be deceptive in some manner, such as using a license without permission or feigning a considerably higher level of quality than it actually has, and must have been sold for money on physical media, a dedicated device, or in legitimate storefronts, either alone or as part of a multi-game collection. You can find valid and invalid examples further down. Selections made in this manner will be vetted before they are accepted and may be declined if they fail the above criteria or are not possible to acquire within a reasonable amount of time or money.

  3. Technically, each Nominator can only have one active nomination at a time, so make sure you order your nominations in the order you'd like them to appear in. If someone else nominates the same game but their nomination comes up first, yours is simply removed from your list.

  4. You can change your nominations at any time, though if gameplay has already been recorded for a particular game you have nominated it will show up as a nomination from you regardless. There is a buffer kept of the next three games to appear on the show.

  5. If you cancel your Patreon pledge or reduce it below $8/mo USD your nominations will no longer appear on the show, but they will be stashed and reinstated if you resume an $8/mo or higher pledge in the future!

How BLG Nominations are Selected

  1. Each Nominator is placed on a card in a deck. There is also a discard pile. The top card of the deck is drawn and that Nominator will have the game at the top of their list of nominations chosen as the main feature for the video.

  2. If a Nominator is drawn who does not have any more games nominated, they will be removed from the deck entirely unless and until they provide more game nominations, at which point their card will be put on top of the deck so they can jump right back in.

  3. The goal for each BLG video is to show a minimum of 12 minutes of gameplay. If the nominated game is so shallow that it cannot provide this, a second card will be drawn and the video will become a "Double Feature" with two games being showcased instead of just one.

  4. Once the gameplay is recorded, the nominators drawn will have their cards put into a discard pile.

  5. When the deck is emptied the discard pile is shuffled and becomes the new deck to draw from.

Examples of Valid and Invalid Game Selections

  • INVALID - "Bible Buffet" (NES)
Although this is an unlicensed NES game sold in stores, it was not making an attempt to deceive and does not infringe on any trademarks or copyrights.

  • INVALID - "Duke Nukem 3D" (Genesis)
Even though this game is not a ROM-hack and is very low-quality, it was originally released exclusively for the Brazillian market by Tec Toy and as such may have been properly licensed, though admittedly details on this are vague.

  • VALID - "Earthworm Jim 2" (NES)
This game is not a ROM-hack of another title and is an unauthorized port from the Genesis/SNES games of the same name.

  • INVALID - "Mega Man: The Sequel Wars" (Genesis)
Despite using the Mega Man license without permission, this game is not being sold for cash and would thus be considered a fan game instead of a bootleg.

  • VALID - "Somari" (NES)
This game is not a ROM-hack of another title and was an unauthorized attempt to make a Sonic the Hedgehog game for the NES using Mario as the main playable character.

  • INVALID - "Sonic the Hedgehog" (SNES)
This game is merely a ROM-hack of "Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos".

  • INVALID - "Super Mario 4" (Game Boy)
This game is merely a ROM-hack of "Crayon Shin-chan 4: Ora no Itazura Dai Henshin".

  • VALID - "Titenic" (NES)
This game is not a ROM-hack of another title and is a blatant unauthorized derivative of the James Cameron "Titanic" movie.
