Ancient DOS Games --- Episode 117

The Kroz Series

Additional Information and Corrections:

  • Click your way here if you want to download the Kroz games from 3D Realms’ website: http://www.3drealms.com/downloads.html

  • Actually, the power rings do show up properly in some Kroz games and not in others. I think it depends on if they're being displayed using +1, +2, +3 etc., or if they're simply showing +, ++, +++, etc.

  • There’s a few minor things I neglected to really talk about in the video, one of which is the difficulty selection at the start: Novice, Experienced and Advanced. Higher difficulty settings simply reduce your starting resources and may also alter a few of the things found in some of the levels. Overall though, the effect is minimal.

  • The sideways levels are also kinda weird, as they play like a platformer, except without being able to jump. Not every Kroz game has these.

  • You can also pick up the letters K R O Z in each level, and doing so in the correct order is worth bonus points. Spelling words for points is a tradition that carried into numerous other Apogee titles.

  • “Kroz” is “Zork” spelled backwards! :D
