Ancient DOS Games --- Episode 68

Visual Star Trek

Additional Information and Corrections:

  • I actually first played this game around the start of 1993 at a friend's place and it's also in a couple of my shareware collections, so I really don't understand why I can't find this game anywhere online besides abandonware websites. If anyone knows of a download link on a fully legitimate website, please let me know so I can post it here!

  • One thing I forgot to talk about was probes. You can launch probes into various sectors in order to get information about those places ahead of time without having to go there first, which is a very handy feature.

  • Those black quadrants you saw in some of the gameplay footage were the result of supernovas. They can happen completely at random, though very infrequently, and can also be triggered by destroying a star and being really unlucky. If you attempt to fly through one you will end up somewhere entirely different than intended.

  • Yeah, the sound's pretty lacking in this game. Even I have to admit, when I'm making a game, sound effects are usually the last thing I worry about. You may've also noticed that all of the freeware games I've made are silent.

  • Thanks to a fan of the show we discovered a very good reason to keep your shields down outside of combat when you know where you're going: You consume DOUBLE energy when moving with shields up! :O
